Doctor, Naturopathic (medical

...a system of practice that bases treatment of
physiological functions and abnormal conditions on natural laws
governing human body: utilized physiological, psychological, and
mechanical methods, such as air, water, light, heat, earth,
phototherapy, food and herb therapy, psychotherapy, electrotherapy,
physiotherapy, minor and orificial surgery, mechanotherapy,
naturopathic corrections and manipulation, and natural methods or
modalities, together with natural medicines, natural processed
foods, and herbs and nature's remedies. Excludes major surgery,
therapeutic use of x-ray and radium, and use of drugs, except those
assimilable substances containing elements or compounds which are
components of body tissues and are physiologically compatible to
body processes for maintenance of life.

Naturopathic
physicians are clinically trained in the use of a wide variety of
natural therapies. They attempt to find the underlying cause of the
patient’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic
treatment. The naturopath will then combine and adapt specific
treatments to the needs of the individual
patient.
Naturopathic medicine is effective in treating most
health problems, both acute and chronic. Some of the therapies
practiced by naturopathic physicians are:
Botanical Medicine
Many plant
substances are powerful medicines that are effective and safe when
used properly. A resurgence of scientific research in Europe and
Asia is demonstrating that some plant substances are superior to
synthetic drugs in clinical situations. Doctors of naturopathic
medicine are trained in the art and science of botanical
medicine.
Nutritional
Therapeutics
The use of appropriate foods and other
dietary factors as therapy are fundamental to the practice of
Naturopathy. A comprehensive understanding of digestion, the
absorption and metabolism of nutrients, the use of supplements and
food as medicine, special diets and the nutritional treatment of all
forms of health problems are all integral factors in optimal body
nutrition. Today we see that a return to chemical-free foods,
alongside other dietary measures, is an effective answer to many
health complaints and common conditions.
Homeopathic Medicine
This medical
system uses highly diluted substances to cure illness. Homeopathic
remedies act to enhance and stimulate the bodies innate immune
response. Some conditions that do not respond to conventional
medicine will respond well to homeopathy.
Physical Medicine
Specific
techniques are used for naturopathic manipulation of the muscles,
bones and spine. Physical medicine also includes physiotherapy,
using cold and heat, gentle electrical impulses, ultrasound,
hydrotherapy and exercise therapy.
Counseling and Stress
Management
Mental attitudes and the emotional and
spiritual state of the individual can be important elements in
healing illness. A naturopathic physician's training includes
counseling, nutritional balancing, stress management and other
methods.
