Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), as defined by National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional/allopathic medicine. The list of what is considered to be CAM changes continually, as those therapies that are proven to be safe and effective become adopted into conventional health care and as new approaches to health care emerge.

Complementary Medicine is a modality, therapy or practice used together with conventional medicine; for example, the use of massage therapy along with the use of prescription medications for the treatment of chronic pain.

Alternative Medical Systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice and are used in place of conventional medicine. Often, these systems have evolved apart from and earlier than the conventional medical approach used in the United States. Examples of alternative medical systems that have developed in Western cultures include naturopathic, chiropractic and homeopathic medicine. Examples of systems that have developed in non-Western cultures include traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.

Naturopathic ("nay-chur-o-PATH-ic") Medicine, or naturopathy, is a CAM alternative medical system. Naturopaths understand that the body has an innate ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. Practitioners work with the goal of address the underlying cause of the condition while supporting the body’s healing capacity, through treatments such as nutrition and lifestyle counseling, dietary supplements, medicinal plants, exercise and homeopathy.

Integrative Medicine, as defined by NCCAM, combines mainstream conventional medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Functional Medicine is a science-based healthcare approach that assesses the underlying causes of illness through individually tailored therapies to restore health and improve function. Functional medicine is more of a philosophic approach to health, rather than a specific treatment modality, and can be applied to most systems of healthcare. Functional medicine has also been called “modern naturopathy”.

Allopathic Medicine, often refered to as "conventional" medicine, is the system of medical practice which treats illnesses by using certain therapies in an attempt to suppress a set of symptoms by producing a condition that is incompatible with the disease.
